The Winemaker's House

You wake, open the shutters of a house that has stood for three hundred years, and in front of you are vineyards and meadows.

The Winemaker's House is the heart of Jablan Winery, Montenegro's only Demeter-certified producer. What the house offers is meant to feel the way the wines taste: grounded, and alive.

The space

Three levels and stone walls that have seen centuries. A terrace where evenings disappear, with a barbecue beside it and an outdoor shower. The ground floor stays naturally cool behind the stone; there is air conditioning in the living room and bedroom for the rest.

The bedroom has a queen bed and a sofa bed; the living room has another. It sleeps four comfortably, five at a push, and a cot is available on request. The staircase between the living room and the ground floor has a safety gate, and children under seven stay free.

This house is for you if

You want slow mornings, good wine, and a version of Montenegro most visitors never find. It suits families and small groups who would rather have the run of a whole house than a room in a hotel.

Our uncle Luka lives next door. He is a quiet man and will not disturb your stay, though we do ask that you respect his privacy around his own house.

A note on the seasons: in early spring up to mid-April, and in late autumn from October, it can get cool. The heating on the middle floor and in the bedroom keeps the house comfortable.

Getting around

Two mountain bikes are yours to use, free of charge. There are hills here, so for exploring the national park at your own pace we rent e-bikes at €25 a day. A walking trail to the fishing village of Karuč starts at the property: 5 km, about an hour and three quarters, and beautiful the whole way.

The village has no shop, which is rather the point. Stock up in Podgorica (30 minutes) or Rijeka Crnojevića (15 minutes) before you arrive. For dinner out, Karuč and Rijeka Crnojevića both have good fish restaurants right on the water.

The wine

The vines outside your window are the ones that make our wine. We farm biodynamically: no chemicals, no irrigation, no shortcuts, and we follow the lunar calendar. Fermentation happens in qvevri, clay vessels buried in the earth. Nothing is filtered, fined, or given added yeast.

Tell us before you arrive and a bottle of our Demeter-certified red will be waiting on your terrace (€25). Private cellar tastings can be arranged with a little notice — worth doing, since you can taste the wine standing in the vineyard it came from.
